Don Rees

"My goal has always been to interpret the subject with a lyric simplicity, striving to give it a new vitality. My work is not a mirror image, not sentimental, not a documentation of facts, but a celebration of my love for paint, form, and, color."

Although Don Rees currently lives and works in his studio in Martinsburg, West Virginia, his interest in art started in Philadelphia, where he was born. He attended the Philadelphia College of Art on a four year scholarship. After graduating, his career took him to New York City, where he worked for many years as a designer.  While in New York City he continued his studies in fine art at The Art Students League, The New School for Social Research and the National Academy of Design. It was during this period that he grew as an oil painter and learned to get beyond the subject matter and experience the quality of the paint and its orchestration. You can sense the structural lessons of Cezanne in his work.  Mr. Rees works directly from the motif be it still life, landscape, or the figure and strives to keep the painting open until it is resolved.
